5 Simple Tips That’ll Get Your Web Videos More Views

Creating web videos? A lot of folks seem to think “if you build it, they will come” but that’s far from true – in fact, making the thing is just the beginning. Now you need to promote it (or them) and here are 5 tips to get you started…

  1. Post your videos to your blog and (this is the important part) include a bullet pointed outline in text for folks watching your videos – this will help your search rankings on Google and give folks who can’t watch your video reasons to save your video for later!
  2. No blog? Email your vendors, for example, and ask them to use your video as a “guest post” on their blog or share it in their company email!
  3. Create a slideshow version of your video – include a link to the video in the slideshow.
  4. Submit your videos to YouTube, Vimeo and other social and bookmarking sites – using relevant keywords in your title, description and tags is extremely important!
  5. Come up with a marketing plan for your video – You may not feel like you have time for brainstorming and planning, but mapping out even a loose video strategy around each video will save you a lot of time & headache down the road. In fact, this is so important it’s the one area where I even recommend hiring a marketer to help if you really can’t make the time. Here are a few bonus tips for video planning:
  • Focus your efforts on 1 target audience.
  • Look for tie-in opportunities, such as holidays, product launches, local/national news or events, etc.
  • Embed your video in an email & send it out to your list – make sure you clearly ask for “likes,” ratings and shares!

Hope that helps!

Client News: EZWEBPLAYER Launches Unlimited Video Player at CES

Press Release

For Immediate Release

CES goers can see launch of new online video platform solution offering unlimited video uploads, bandwidth and storage; usage backed by Amazon CloudFront with no branding or advertising.

Chicago, IL, January 5, 2012 — EZWebPlayer today announces the release of the new unlimited video hosting solution for consumers which brings unlimited video storage, uploading, and bandwidth without branding and advertising. This service provides tremendous value to consumers that have only had access to free branded solutions in the past. The 2 year old company harnesses the immense scale and robust infrastructure provided by Amazon CloudFront to deliver premium services at a low monthly cost.

With the inclusion of a video camera in so many new devices from iPads to helmet cams, most consumers are walking around with a video camera in one form or another these days. It’s not difficult to upload your video online, but the real question comes down to Branding, Advertising and Privacy.

CEO Clint Pollock says, “Before EZWebPlayer, consumers only had access to branded, free solutions that painted advertising all over their content. Now, everyone has access to a fully featured, unbranded solution, with NO ADVERTISING for one low, flat fee; lower priced than a cheap lunch for two.”

The new EZWebPlayer functionality includes video channels, social sharing, e.g., publishing to Facebook and other social destinations, and enhanced mobile support for iPhone, iPad, and Android.

As more consumers look for ways to manage, store and deliver video, for the first time, consumers can enjoy Enterprise Level functionality without tripping over branding and advertising.

EZWebPlayer will be at the iHollywood LaunchFest at CES
Clarion Hotel — Las Vegas, Two blocks from LVCC

How to: CREATE AMAZING LOW COST VIRAL VIDEOS THAT DRIVE QUALITY CLICKS!

Wish you could create that contagious viral video that instantly hits a million views and gets EVERYONE talking?

Me too!

The reality though, it seems, is that neither you or I have the budget or the time to pursue that strategy! So then what?

Well, let’s look at devising a more systematic approach to dramatically improving your chances of getting found & shared without purely gambling on success.

A note about YouTube videos.

Since YouTube is the big kid on campus, and you’ll probably spend a lot of time there researching, it’s important to note that the “view” number may seriously skewed by mentions on traditional media, links to popular websites, the age of the video or other “campaigns” implemented to boost the count. A site or video that is promoted to the front page of social news site Digg.com, for example, can get pummeled with a million hits, but the traffic is best described as “non-converting.” Users come for the content in droves, but they don’t don’t buy or even click around! If you’re Coke or Pepsi, this might be fine. You’ll add it to the “branding” line in your budget and call it a day, but we’re talking about driving clicks that count!

3 ways to using viral videos to drive quality traffic at a low cost.

  1. Benefit Driven Videos: Providing specific value to current & potential customers through “How to videos” or Podcasts is a great way to gain traction with your ideal customer! If you really know your customers, this one’s almost a no-brainer!
  2. User Generated Content: This is usually done with contesting of some type, perhaps with a product or other motivating factor can energize users  and compel them to upload their own videos per your request. If the prize is interesting enough, this could create quite a bit of buzz for your brand!
  3. Loud Cheap Different: Look very closely at all of your current videos, your competitors videos as well as everything you can find related to your category on YouTube and everywhere else. Then run the other way! Create something totally insanely different! Ensure that it stands out! Totally focus on creating a video geared solely toward making an impact on your target customer and, to ensure that this video “gets traction,” plan on promoting it using a keyword buys! Prepare to be loud & brash or prepare for disappointment!

As in any Word of Mouth Marketing campaign, the key to a successful viral video is in the impact it makes on customers. Viral videos need to drive emotion or offer significant value in order to be spread from person to person, but they do not need to be expensive to produce! There are great low cost / high impact examples in Cheap & Easy Web Videos You can do Too

Oh, btw, if you create a video and it “goes viral” with a million hits and it gets everyone talking…  let’s call it a bonus!

…and why would (I) my business use it?WTF is Twitter? dark men classic t shirt

The same reasons that make Twitter so popular are those that make describing twitter problematic.

While that might not makes sense at first glance, once you realize that  Twitter has no real product direction or single “primary use” you may begin to realize just how difficult it is to describe (and figure out) Twitter’s relevance as a businesses tool.

Here’s a parallel challenge:

  • Come up with one blanket statement that clearly describes what our existing land line phone systom does.

Why is that a challenge? Well, in your description you will have had to include all uses of consumer land line phones such as fax transmission, internet connections, VOIP phone line connections, 911 ermergency services, automated home alarm warning services, etc. So, that being said, please consider the technology of Twitter just as complex.

That’s all great, but WTF is Twitter?

The direct answer: Twitter is whatever you can make of it.

That’s probably disappointing, but its absolutely the reason people say things like “I’m still figuring Twitter out” or “trying to get used to Twitter” or “I don’t get it.” The unfortunate fact is, once you create your account you are stuck trying figure out what to do with little to no direction and that takes time most people don’t have. Fortunately there are a lot of folks, like myself, willing to spend way too much time writing stuff like this and trying to help out:-)

10 things you can do with Twitter (for free):

  1. Connect with fans using Twitter by offering relevant information.
  2. Provide updates on your product for active Twitter users (millions & growing).
  3. Improve your website by posting updated information to your site via Twitter (RSS) fed widget.
  4. Offer scheduled information to anyone interested. May included daily, weekly or random information to customers which could include specials, coupons,
  5. Follow experts in many industries for fresh information as it happens.
  6. Post last minute deals, specials, emergency information, etc. to customers or other interested parties (because users choose to follow you we can assume they are “interested”).
  7. Update any RSS capable reader or product connected to the internet.
  8. Get found in real-time keyword searches. *Google, Bing and other search engines are adding Twitter search results to their own first page results and further integration is ongoing.
  9. Have your “tweet” reposted in the streams of organizations followed by tens, hundreds, thousands or even millions of passionate people.
  10. Publicly comment on anything.

So why use Twitter?Social Profile Business Card tfl 2.0 vertblank bak profilecard

First and foremost, because the simple act of posting information on Twitter significantly increases the chances of being found in search engines and because using Twitter as one of your marketing channels makes for a great introduction to using Twitter.

What did I miss? Got more ways to use Twitter? Do you disagree? Please add your thoughts and ideas in the comments.

16:9 is Dead! The Future of Video is Vertical Mobile for Home & Business

3D? HD?… Blue Ray? Fuhgedaboutit.

Video format wars are becoming more irrelevant with every passing year. If you look at still photography, for example, and ask yourself “What are folks looking for?” you’ll quickly see the answer has little to do with format and everything to do with finding the most practical camera. Everyone wants a great quality photo, but that’s not what they “need.” R.I.P. cameraAll they need is to recognize the images taken (while drinking in a dark bar or at a birthday party) and, generally speaking, every couple hundred dollar camera out there shoots a descent photo. The most practical camera out there is the thinnest one with the largest view finder – that’s the camera that can be thrown in the pocket of any outfit and, more importantly for many, it has a viewfinder that’s large enough to show everyone at that party how they look in the photo I just took. So how does that relate to video? As technologies go, video matured far faster than still photography. I remember my how cheap my first couple of point and shoot film cameras were, and they were horrible, but “good enough.” I could make out the “what” and the “who” in most photos. Along came digital photography and shortly after, an affordable video camera that also met my “good enough” criteria. Fast forward to today and you’ll find that “good enough” video camera in my phone.

The Consumer to Home Entertainment Disconnect

I’ve long predicted the demise of today’s family room as an entertainment center, but I’ll move past that to a different observation – the demise of the home movie played on a home entertainment center. Clearly, no one is playing home movies on their TV anymore and why would they? By the time your family and friends have arrived at your home for a get together they’ve already seen your home movies, from baby’s first steps to your last fuzzy memory karaoke night, on Facebook.

Video Playback is Broken

Watch the parents at the next birthday party you go to or stand in the crowd at a kids soccer game and take video with your smart phone – better yet, watch the parents in the crowd taking videos. Notice anything strange? Probably not, because everyone is shooting images and videos of the field and their kids in the most natural way possible. That is, they have their video cameras (in this case their phones) held high in the air at whatever angle suits them best. Some have two hands holding their phones in the air and others have their phones vertical. But they’re all taking photos and video vertically and horizontally. Now consider this, if you’re shooting a video vertically, up and down, where can you play it back while retaining the quality of the vertical video? That’s right, only on your phone. On any other media you will be forced to fit the video you shot vertically into a horizontal box, leaving black bars on the sides and totally degrading your video.

The Solution: a Video Format Tweak

mobile phones taking video at anglesSo what does all this mean? First of all, it means an adjustment is needed on the player side. Every mobile player I know of plays horizontally with a large play bar across the video. Sure on most phones the bar gets hidden when not in use, but that’s not the point. The next logical evolution to this play window is “vertical-izing” playback. When a phone is held vertical the functions need to be at the bottom! That’s right, just like any other application! Second, we need to adjust embedding to match the way folks use their mobile cameras. Right now, if you go shoot video for your business or blog and embed it, you get a player that is horizontal in nature. YouTube & Vimeo? Horizontal. Video as a format is horizontal, but in practice that is no longer true and this horizontal thinking is what needs to change.

What the Evolution of Video Sharing Means for Business

Without a doubt, there’s room for vertical players and not just in mobile, though that’s probably where we’ll see them first, but on websites and in the “living room.” As a father constantly shooting video of my son from my android phone, I see the value in a vertical player on social networking sites and as a New Media Marketer who sees the opportunity in creating video content for business, I apply that same thinking to business sites. Let’s look at gaming for a minute, if you walk into an arcade you see games of all shapes and sizes. Pinball machines tend to be deep and thin, where many of the new racing games actually surround the player with screens creating an ultra-panoramic experience. Why limit the videos you can present your viewer to wide screen low profile playback? If you’re selling recliners or waterfall art, for example, wouldn’t a tall skinnier video player benefit you?

vertical video playback on iphoneThink Outside the Video Box

Now let’s think about that same example in the mobile space – if your product is tall and thin, like a recliner or waterfall, a wide video space will not benefit you. Furthermore, if you’re creating a how to video on playing the flute, although you would clearly benefit from a tall video over a low wide one, are you gutsy enough to shoot sideways videos? Face is, if your video is being viewed on a mobile device the orientation will not matter and your audience will better appreciate and enjoy the video shot vertically. …or will you do what everyone else does and shoot it wide, presenting your viewers with a short image of your product surrounded by black bars?

If you know of a mobile player that has moved the play button & functions to the bottom of the player for “vertical play” let me know in the comments. What do you think the future holds for video playback? Will integrated video & animation into HTML5 render this conversation moot?

Inject Your Video Blog Posts with Share-ability, Bookmark-ocity & SEO-itude!

If you’re shooting & posting web videos on your site you’re probably thinking life is pretty good out there on the cutting edge! You might be right but, chances are, you’re also missing out on a ton of Web Best Practices you can only get with text on that page!

Videos and Text
Your catchy title just isnt enough!

No script for your video? No problem! Use a traditional Outline format with bold headlines and brief descriptions. Outlines are easy to skim and a well developed outline can add an air of credibility to almost any post!

Here are 5 ways to get the Google juice your video content deserves and make your Videos or Video Blog Posts even better!

  1. Bolded (or html) headers: if they’re keyword focused you will improve your SEO dramatically!
  2. Bullet Points: Open up your content to those who are not able to immediately watch a video. They might be at work, on a mobile device or whatever, but if you show them there’s good content in that video, chances are, they’ll bookmark it, share it or come back to watch!
  3. Pull out Quotes & Key Phrases: Because I’ve been disappointed by so many videos with big promises and no payoff, it’s rare if I stop to watch a video. Show me you have an expert making a good point or two and I’ll click play!
  4. Highlight Controversy: If you’re out to get comments or go viral, “controversial” is where it’s at! Pull out the most heated arguments, bold them and throw them right up under your video!
  5. Add Brief Descriptions: Make your content more attractive, not just to search engines but to folks looking for something to quote. Include short, punchy, “retweet” friendly sentences to encourage sharing! Keep them under 130 characters, with spaces, so shortened URLs may be included.

Bonus Video Blog Tip: DON’T include “video” in your title unless it’s a post about video. DO include “video” in your category & tags! Why not in your title? Folks who are not in a position to watch a video won’t click it. They’ll assume there’s no content other than the video and in most cases they’ll be right – but since you’ve added key points in text to yours, they won’t be left empty handed!

10 reasons YouTube isn’t Good Enough for Realtors, Photographers …You!

*Originally posted @ EZWebplayer.com/blog

First let’s get something out of the way and address the question “Should your business be on Youtube?”

Answer: Yes!

YouTube is a great marketing channel, there’s no doubt about it… but that doesn’t mean it’s a great content channel for your business!

looking for online video playersHere are 10 reasons you should look elsewhere when adding videos to your website .

1. Bad Ads

Certainly you know videos you post on Youtube may be subjected to distracting, and possibly even competitive ads right on top. Even worse, ad previews on popular videos force you to sit through a commercial that has nothing to do with the video and for the small business owner, this is actually a missed opportunity! Those should be your ads, but instead they are from a 3rd party and they reflect badly on you. Of course, if you are a “premiere” product, they certainly cheapen your brand!

2. Control embedding: Share Everywhere! …or not!

To embed or not to embed… that is the question. On YouTube, you only get 2 choices (yes or no), but if you use a custom player like EZWebPlayer, you can literally decide not to allow embedding on specific sites, you know – like your competition’s website, on a complaint site or even other sites that may be housing inappropriate content.

3. Quality

Youtube is hit or miss. Sometimes video plays great but more often then not I find myself suffering through YouTube’s stop and go loading process which just drives me crazy!

4. Flagging & Copyright

Let’s face it, that “flag” button is a prime target for sabotage and Google isn’t exactly known for for it’s great customer service! I’m not suggesting you upload copyrighted material – please do not – what I’m saying is this, if anyone sends a take-down letter to Youtube, whether it’s in the right or not, your audio will be yanked first and questions will be asked later… if at all. This is not a risk you should be willing to take for your business videos!

5. Backup

What happens when you lose a Youtube video? What happens if your video is the subject of a take-down notice? Well… it’s just gone! You are left to find and re-upload that video.

6. Youtube’s Video End Page Sucks (for you)

This is the “other videos you may be interested in” end page which is basically competition for your content. You don’t want someone sitting there watching random Youtube videos on your website, especially if they’re your competitors videos! With a custom web video player you choose the action at the end of your video. Perhaps you would just like the video to stop on an information page or maybe you’d like it to play again from the top. Your choice.

7. SEO (more of a tip)

Ok, Youtube is the second biggest search engine in the world, and that’s great, but Google is still the first and they love blogs! Don’t rely on a YouTube Channel to deliver your videos! Setup a blog and embed your video on it. It’s a fact that Google indexes text better than video and that means you should at least include an outline of content with the video on your page. This will improve your page ranking exponentially!

8. Length

Youtube just raised it’s time limit to 15 minute, but that not appropriate for every project. Realtors, for example, may want to host walking tours or elaborate interviews and how to videos. For photographers, while a demo reel should be kept under the 15 minute time limit, sponsored programming won’t make the cut! It only takes a couple of segments and sponsored messages to land you way past the 15 minute mark! Wedding videos? Forget about it!

9. Live Streaming

You’ll need to turn to 3rd party vendors like Ustream to get streaming functionality and that’s just another account and more you have to learn! Choose an Online Video Player that offers uploaded or streaming video in the same simple to manage solution.

10. Statistics

Measuring clicks, views, referrers or whatever it is that you use to gauge success is key! Yes, you can get some stats from YouTube, but get used to “insufficient data” for videos with lower views and, quite frankly, other online video players will actually give you stats that are worth reading!

So what can you do about it? How do you get someone who’s watching your stuff on Youtube to click over to your site?

Steer those distracted Youtubers over to your website where they can watch your pristine high-quality web videos featuring your brand & your ads! It’s “E-Z” …here’s how:

  1. Use Youtube’s annotation tool. YouTube Annotation Tool examplesThis will let you send a click-able message to you viewers right from the video they’re watching! Create a note at the beginning of your video that says something like “For a better ad-free viewing experience click here! Watch this video ad-free at http://www.MyWebsite.whatever” (Link to YouTube Annotation Tool How to Video)
  2. Insert at teaser line in your video’s description pointing to your blog or website. The more relevant content you can offer, the better!
  3. Create an introduction for your video! No, don’t start your video with “Hey, go to my website and watch this!” – you’ll lose viewers. You need to be a little more clever than that. Create an introduction that pumps up your viewers about the upcoming video and, rather quickly, suggests that there is a better quality version available for them to watch & share over on your website.
  4. Offer a second link option. In your tweets, for example, you can say something like “Check out my video: How to tell time on Youtube http://bit.notly or Ad Free on my site http://bet.ter.video”
  5. Edit in a promo onto the end of your Youtube video, now you may be thinking “Why would I do that when the video is over?” …and that may be true, but hopefully that person will stick around to watch it, or perhaps they will share or bookmark your video. If they want to see it again they’ll go to your website and watch!

Creating Web Video That’ll Work for Your Business

It’s no secret anyone can create & upload web video to their site, Youtube or other sites easily, but that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. Here are 3 key points to consider to help keep your videos fresh, interesting and effective followed by a great discussion by some of the pros on creating videos for business.

  1. Don’t ONLY create videos to increase your chances of being found. Have specific business objectives (a strategy) in addition to SEO such as:
    • Improve your customer service by posting how to videos.
    • Added value to current clients with “tips” videos.
    • Go viral – worth mentioning because, while getting millions of views on Youtube is possible, it’s really a practical goal.
  2. Stay on brand. “Premiere” products will want to pay special attention to quality and serious brand will have to avoid silly or tacky subjects.
  3. How many can you make? Creating videos takes time! Try to create a system where you shoot a couple at once so you can post them over time or get into the habit of shooting quick videos throughout your week. This will help you keep your content fresh and new!

Check out this podcast! Starting at 45min 15seconds begins a great discussion of how different businesses can use video. Thi is also a great  example of the discussion every business owner should be having before they start producing videos for their business!
